Having graduated from the Academy of Design, Sri Lanka, in 2005, Charlene Thuring joined Linea Aqua (Pvt) Ltd for a period of six years, during which she undertook two secondments with Victoria’s Secret in New York. There, she worked closely with Matthew Zink, who was then the Head of Design for Swimwear and Footwear.

In her capacity as a senior designer at Linea Aqua, Charlene was an integral part of the team responsible for engineering swimwear designs for a multitude of international labels, among which were Calvin Klein, Victoria’s Secret, Speedo, Lands’ End and Triumph. Inspired thereafter to pursue a career as an independent fashion designer, she started her label, C.H.A.R.L.E.N.E.

“My collection for Swim Week Colombo is called “Aves”, which is the Latin word for birds. I’ve used a lot of flamingo prints – which are new – and combined them with classic geometric shapes and pastel colours.”

ON THE IMPORTANCE OF SWIM WEEK COLOMBO
“It draws the attention of the local fashion scene to swimwear provides a platform for us, as designers, to connect with consumers and the industry.”

ON HOW TO APPROACH AND BUY SWIMWEAR
“I would advise people not to be so worried about their bodies and what other people think. You have to be confident to wear a swimsuit. Wear what you believe is the most appropriate piece for your body and own it.”
