Charini Suriyage, Founder of CHARINI, has made a name for herself in the ethical fashion arena. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Fashion Design from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, and a Master’s Degree in Design Management from the London College of Fashion.
Charini has, over the past decade, been employed at MAS intimates and currently works as a General Manager of Design. She is also the co-founder of ZUDHORA, a retail store in Colombo.
Inspired by her love for experimenting with combinations of the traditional and modern, Charini’s designs combine her Sri Lankan heritage with contemporary design. CHARINI, since its launch at Colombo Fashion Week 2009, has won several local and international awards and retails in Europe and Sri Lanka.
Her collection for Swim Week Colombo 2017 celebrates feminine power – “It is about contouring the body through prints and panels. It’s got a lot to do with the fit and how it works with the curves of a body. I’ve used contouring placement, and mesh panelling which is quite trendy at the moment and also criss-crossing with eyelets.”
ON THE IMPORTANCE OF SWIM WEEK COLOMBO
“It is the key show for Sri Lanka that attracts the right crowd, which is important to me as well. I’m new to swim so I want to be known as a swimwear brand as well as my other lines and I think this is the right platform for this.”
ON HOW TO APPROACH AND BUY SWIMWEAR
“People have to understand what their body is. The reason that I go for contouring is because of that, you have to figure out what swimsuit silhouette works for your shape.”
