FROM THE FRONT ROW: Maus

An interior designer by profession, Annika Fernando created MAUS in 2013. MAUS is a ladieswear brand designed and produced in Sri Lanka. The brand presents three collections each year based on the seasons of the country. The three collections are Summer, Monsoon and Fête, complementing the Sri Lanka’s tropical lifestyle.
In time for this year’s Monsoon 2016, MAUS is presenting its first swimwear collection, MAUS SWIM, which will keep with the brand’s ethos of minimalistic, clean design – “[The collection] is a reflection of Maus’ design ethos and epitomises going back to the basics – it is meant to be timeless. And there’s a surprising palette for when it hits stores.”
ON THE IMPORTANCE OF SWIM WEEK COLOMBO
“Doing a swimwear collection is relevant to where we are. A swimwear line was always a plan – the timing of Swim Week just sped up the process and pushed me to get the collection together. I think it’s a great initiative.”
ON HOW TO APPROACH AND BUY SWIMWEAR
“I think swimwear is very personal, rather like innerwear. As a designer, I have approached swimwear keeping in mind different body shapes and having something for everyone.
Maus has bikini sets that are mix and match – so you will be able mix tops and bottoms, sizes and styles depending on what you are comfortable with and which part of your body you’d like to flatter.
If I was to advise a consumer, I’d look at it in my own role as retailer and find the best style match for the body shape and colour for the skin tone. It needs to be flattering and it is imperative the wearer is comfortable. Nothing less flattering then someone wearing something they are not comfortable in.”
