The Making of the Perfect Green Bikini
June 15, 2017
It is an envisioning effort to use technology and intent to create an ecosystem of good and clean practices that are available to any designer or label to use and engage with.
The making of the Perfect Green Bikini is the creation of that ecosystem that annually shifts the yardstick with further advancement of technology to make garments which are more green conscious and earth sensitive. Every year, the search for more innovative technology and research into alternate resources will continue on to phase 02 and beyond.
Issues to be addressed
Currently, the textile industry is the second largest polluter in the world, second only to the oil industry. Contributing to this “title” is the fact that the apparel industry accounts for 10% of the global carbon emissions as well as cotton production being responsible for more than 18% of worldwide pesticide use and 25% of total insecticide use with over 70 million trees are logged every year and turned into plant-based fabrics like rayon and viscose.
However, the invisible impacts are significant contributory factors as well. Plastic microfibers shed from our synthetic clothing into the water supply account for 85% of the human-made material found along ocean shores, threatening marine wildlife and ending up in our food supply.
Although the environmental impacts are evident, exploitation of the workforce within the apparel industry proves to be another issue which needs to be addressed in the growth of the fast-fashion industry which implores cheap labour
Despite many large brands in the apparel industry strive for environmental sustainability and ethical practices, the lack of transparency along the supply chain together with the difficulty of establishing a closed loop continues to be a key issue to be addressed.
To create a 100% Green bikini, one which the technology, know-how, manufacturers and suppliers will be available to any designer or in order to foster an ecosystem of best practices.
Starting with SW18, Phase 01 will collaborate with a designer label in order to understand the strengths and challenges of an ideal green bikini which currently exists in the market.
In this phase, Swim Week Colombo has undertaken strides to:
- Understand the supply chain involved in the creation of a garment
- Identify the current technology available in terms of more environmentally friendly material, a lower carbon footprint associated with production, distribution and transport, the use of the product, the disposal of the product and the recyclable potential of the product
- Set a standard against which successive phases of the Green Bikini can be measured
- Set a benchmark for the ideal Green Bikini
Over the next few seasons of Swim Week Colombo, collaborations with multiple designers and industry leaders will allow Swim Week Colombo to achieve the end goal of “unburdening the cycle”. This term elaborates on the importance of minimizing waste and understanding measures necessary to undertake a cradle-to-cradle approach along with a user-oriented, empathetic design in terms of a completely transparent and traceable supply chain, right until distribution.
The Perfect Green Bikini will not only be a 100% Carbon and Water neutral product but will also be Biodiversity conscious and continue to “Invest in The Environment”.
